Platteville to Honor Vietnam War Veterans Through Traveling Display

PLATTEVILLE, WI (July 5, 2016) – Sponsored by the City of Platteville, American Legion Post 42, VFW Post 5274, and the Veterans Honor Roll Association, a new traveling display honoring Vietnam Veterans is now available for area businesses and organizations to feature. “Members of the local Veterans Service organizations felt it would show respect for local Vietnam Veterans and their families if the City of Platteville added this display to local businesses and organizations. Vietnam was a difficult time for this country, and this display will help local residents appreciate what the Veterans did for us,” explained Bill Kloster of the American Legion.

Through the 2008 National Defense Authorization Act, and a 2012 Presidential Proclamation, the Commemoration of the 50th Anniversary of the Vietnam War will take place through Veterans Day of 2025. The City of Platteville was recognized by the Department of Defense April 21, 2016 as a Commemorative Partner for their “willingness to assist and support a grateful nation in thanking and honoring our Vietnam War Veterans, their families, and those who served with, or in support of the Armed Forces.”

•  There are five commemorative program objectives that the display aims to cover:

•  Thank and honor veterans of the Vietnam War, including personnel who were held as prisoners of war, or listed as missing in action, for their service and sacrifice on behalf of the United States and to thank and honor the families of these veterans.

•  To highlight the service of the Armed Forces during the Vietnam War and the contribution of Federal agencies and governmental and non-governmental organizations that served with, or in support of, the Armed Forces.

•  To pay tribute to the contributions made on the home front by the people of the United States during the Vietnam War.

•  To highlight the advances in technology, science, and medicine related to military research conducted during the Vietnam War.

•  To recognize the contributions and sacrifices made by the allies of the United States during the Vietnam War.

“The display will get people thinking about their experiences here at home as well as those who served our country,” stated Tom Taber Vietnam veteran.  “They can then write about those experiences and send them to the Platteville Journal and let others read about them.  We should not forget about those who served,” he added.

This display includes a framed copy of the Presidential Proclamation, a framed copy of the Commemorative Objectives, the certificate received from the Department of Defense naming Platteville as a Commemorative Partner, an American flag, a Vietnam War Commemorative flag, and the table to display the documents.
