Parking
Parking regulations vary throughout the city, please use the resources below to learn more about specific parking areas. It is encouraged to note all posted signs and curb markings when parking your vehicle.
Frequently Asked Questions
I am unable to register a new vehicle or renew my current registration. I'm told my registration is suspended. How do I find out why it is suspended?
The most common reason is that there is likely unpaid parking tickets associated with your name and registration.
You can find out if you have any restrictions against your vehicle registration record that prevent you from obtaining a vehicle title or registration product on the DOT Incident Request page.
You also can do a Driver License Status Check or Reinstatement Eligibility Check on that same page if you are wanting to check your driving status.

I sold my car, but I'm getting Parking Ticket Notices in the mail. Why?
A couple reasons why:
If you left your plates on your car, DOT records are going to show you as the current owner. If you can contact the new owner and obtain your license plates, that is ideal. You can use those plates on another vehicle you purchase if you so choose (saves you money if the plates are still current!). If you cannot get your plates back, you should Cancel them with the DOT.
If the new owner has not registered the car in their name yet, the VIN will still show you as the current owner. You must complete a Seller Notification to show you sold the vehicle:
Beginning January 1, 2016, law (342.41 Identity of buyer) went into effect requiring a person who sells a motor vehicle to another person, including transferring a junk vehicle by bill of sale, to submit notification to the department that a sale has occurred. This is to be done within 30 days of the sale.
This law DOES NOT apply for transfer to or from dealers or other non-individuals, such as companies, charities and government agencies; this requirement is ONLY for sales from one individual to another individual. This can be done on the DOT's Seller Notification Webpage. This is also a great source of information BEFORE you sell your vehicle, so you have all the correct information prepared BEFORE you sell your vehicle.
You are responsible for unpaid parking tickets in your name unless you have documentation proving the sale of the vehicle and the name and address of the new owner.

Who is issued a CITY Parking Permit? Can I purchase a parking permit?
Specific streets in the city are designated as permit parking areas. There are numerous signs that alert drivers to these restrictions. The permit required is a CITY (NOT Campus) Parking Permit and are only issued to property owners in the permit parking area. If renting a property in the permit area, your permit will be issued to you by your landlord/property manager. Permits found to be misused (to include fraudulent permits) will be confiscated and appropriate citations issued.
The permits are not for sale and are not to be sold.

Why did I receive an alternate side parking (or emergency route) ticket when it didn't even snow?
The purpose of this regulation is to allow access by plows when it does snow. Tickets are issued consistently throughout the winter to ensure compliance on those nights when it is needed for snow clearing. For winter parking regulations, see the City Parking Regulations and Maps.
