Garbage & Recycling Information
The City provides solid waste & recycling services for one and two family dwellings only. This service is on a weekly basis. Those streets east of Second Street or Rountree Avenue are collected on Monday. Second Street and Rountree Avenue and points west are collected on Tuesday. Each residence is allowed up to 2 each 35 gallon containers or bags. If a residence has more garbage than that, there are bags available for $1 at Heiser's, Piggly Wiggly or City Hall. Please have solid waste and recycling at the curb no later than 7:00 AM on collection day.
Faherty, Inc will observe six holidays: New Year's, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas.
(New Year's Day, Independence Day and Christmas Day will vary)
UPCOMING HOLIDAYS: 2023-2024
Independence Day: Tuesday, July 4 - Garbage/Recycling pick-up will occur on Wednesday, July 5, 2023.
Christmas Day: Monday, December 25 - Garbage/Recycling pick-up will occur on Tuesday, December 26, 2023.
New Year's Day: Monday, Jan 1, 2024 - Garbage/Recycling pick-up will occur on Tuesday, January 2, 2024.
On the week of the holiday, if the holiday falls prior to, or on the day of your service, Collection will be one day later. Holidays that fall on the weekend will not be affected.
For example:
Labor Day and Memorial Day will always affect the garbage pick-up as they will always be on Mondays. The week following Labor Day and Memorial Day weekends, normal Monday pick-ups will take place on Tuesday and normal Tuesday pick-ups will take place on Wednesday. As Thanksgiving is always on Thursday, Platteville trash pick-up days are not affected.
Christmas Tree Disposal:
The Street Department will pick up Christmas trees placed curbside (weather permitting) on Monday, January 9, 16, 23, and 30, 2024.
What can I recycle?
PLASTICS:
Household container plastics #I through #7 are recyclable. Plastic bags (grocery, newspaper, etc. – no black or brown bags) that are clean and dry should be placed inside a clear or transparent bag and tied shut; full bag should be no larger than a basketball. Plastic items that are not recyclable include: formed Styrofoam, packing peanuts and oil bottles.
METALS:
Tin and Aluminum Food, Beverage, and Aerosol cans, can be recycled. They should be empty and the plastic tops removed. Small items of scrap metal may also be recycled (pots, pans, toasters, etc.), nothing smaller than 2 inches or larger than a basketball and weighing more than 10 lbs. Cardboard sided juice cans and paint cans are not recyclable.
GLASS:
Green, brown and clear bottles and jars only. Windows, mirrors, glassware, ceramics, and lightbulbs are not recyclable.
PAPER:
Newspapers, magazines, office paper, phone books, paper milk, and juice cartons and junk mail should be placed loose in the recycling bin. Gift wrapping paper (non-foil type) is also recyclable. Tissue or paper towels, food and candy wrappers are not recyclable.
CARDBOARD:
All cardboard boxes including paperboard (cereal boxes, etc..) are recyclable. Please flatten boxes; pieces should be no larger than 3 feet by 3 feet. Wax and plastic coated cardboard are not recyclable.
Drivers look for the recycling bins to determine if a stop is needed. (Bins can be purchased in the City Treasurer's office for $15.)
Recyclables may be mixed in clear or transparent bags and placed in bins.
Please rinse containers!
Preparing recyclables correctly is important for the Recycling Center automated single-stream sorting process. Proper preparation ensures that recyclables will not be landfilled, helping keep costs down.
