Make Music Underground: Tri-State Homeschool Choir to Perform in Bevans Mine
PLATTEVILLE, Wis., June 10, 2022—As part of Make Music Platteville on June 21, The Mining & Rollo Jamison Museums will host the Tri-State Homeschool Choir for an hour-long performance from 1 – 2 p.m. in the historic 1845 Bevans Mine in the Museum’s backyard. Experience the unique acoustics and atmosphere 50 feet underground as you listen to a fabulous lineup of songs. This performance is part of Platteville’s Make Music Celebration, an annual city-wide free day of music held on the summer solstice.
The Museum launched Platteville’s underground music scene when the Bevans Mine opened to the public in 1976. That year, local composer Margot King created the musical “Tommy Knockers” for a special underground performance. Last year, the Tri-State Homeschool Choir revived the musical numbers on Mine Day on August 21 to celebrate a trifecta of anniversaries: the 50th anniversary of the Mining Museum, the 45th anniversary of the Bevans mine ribbon-cutting, and the 40th anniversary of the Rollo Jamison Museum opening in Platteville.
The tradition continues this year with the Tri-State Homeschool Choir performing hymns, folk music, and pop songs. Light refreshments will be provided following the performance and visitors are invited to socialize in the Museum backyard. Visitors are requested to register in advance for this free event by visiting our website at www.mining.jamison.museum/programs. This performance is just one of many exciting musical events taking place throughout Platteville on June 21. The full schedule for this year's Make Music Day can be found at www.makemusicday.org/platteville.
Make Music Platteville, part of the international Fête de la Musique, is a celebration of sound occurring annually on the summer solstice (June 21). Joining over 1,000 cities in 103 countries, Make Music Platteville is a free event to attend and participate in, and is open to all ages, genres, styles, and abilities.
The Mining & Rollo Jamison Museums are located on Main Street in Platteville, Wisconsin, in the heart of the historic Upper Mississippi Valley lead-zinc mining region.
