Re-opening the Mine for Underground Adventure – Tour the Bevans Lead Mine at the Mining & Rollo Jamison Museums
The Mining and Rollo Jamison Museums are proud to re-open the Bevans Lead Mine for the 42nd year of mine tours. Tours of the Bevans Lead Mine will be available again this May to take visitors through over 100 years of local lead and zinc mining history. Over 150 years ago Lorenzo Bevans struck it rich just a few yards from the museum back door. The 1845 Bevans Lead Mine produced over two million pounds of lead ore in one year. As you walk down the 90- step incline to the mine, your senses will be alive as the temperature and humidity levels change.
A visit to the headframe shows how zinc ore was hoisted to the surface and hand-sorted. Tours of the mine are complemented by a ride on our 1931 mine train (weather permitting) and exhibits on the history of Southwest Wisconsin in the Mining & Rollo Jamison Museums galleries.
Mine tours will be available this year Wednesdays through Sundays, May 1st through October 31st at 10:30 am, 12:00 pm, 1:30 pm, and 3:30 pm. Mine tours and accompanying events are free for Museum Members, see www.mining.jamison.museum/members to become a member today.
To celebrate the re-opening of the Mine, we will present the following May programs:
