Siren Malfunction on May 1st

PLATTEVILLE, WI (May 2, 2018) –On Tuesday, May 1, at approximately 6 p.m. the City of Platteville Tornado Warning Siren activated outside normal control.  The Police Department confirmed that human error has been ruled out as the cause of the siren activation. There was no active warning at the time and an emergency notification/Nixle alert was sent notifying residents of the false siren activation.

The City of Platteville takes emergency notification very seriously and has taken immediate steps to determine the cause of the false siren activation and remedy any problems with the system.  At this point it is believed that a radio frequency from an outside source was the cause of the siren activation. However, this could be related to other paging tones that were sent out just prior to the tornado siren activation.

The Platteville Police Department did conduct a monthly siren test today as scheduled and the Tornado Warning Sirens activated properly.

Residents of Platteville should continue to heed all emergency warnings. The Platteville Police Department encourages residents to sign up for emergency notification/Nixle alerts by visiting www.platteville.org/police.
