FAQs
How long does it take to plow the city?
Generally it takes around 8-10 hours to clear the streets. It may take longer due to conditions. Plowing will occur on major roads first, dead ends last. The city will not clean out the end of your driveway.
How much does garbage collection cost in the city?
Within the City of Platteville garbage and recycling from single family and duplexes is available. A yearly fee of $69 is charged to the property tax bill which covers a portion of the total cost.
How much should my water bill be? Do you have an average usage chart?
Average Residential Usage Chart below. It’s never good to compare bills with someone else as bills are based on YOUR usage. The standard monthly rate for all residential customers is $40.91* before any water usage. Things to consider are how many are in your household, guests, how often and how long you shower or bathe, watering the yard, how much laundry you do, age/efficiency of your appliances, etc.. Average usage by adults is 200 cubic feet per month and that's somewhat on the high end. Small children - you can probably figure 100 cubic feet for a small child.
*If you have a separate meter for watering lawns, you will need to add $4.75 to your monthly base charges.
# Persons | Avg Usage (cf) | Monthly Bill |
---|---|---|
1 | 200 | $59.31 |
2 | 400 | $77.71 |
3 | 600 | $96.11 |
4 | 800 | $114.51 |
5 | 1000 | $132.91 |
6 | 1200 | $151.31 |
7 | 1400 | $169.71 |
8 | 1600 | $188.11 |

Recreation programs are occasionally cancelled due to excessive heat or inclement weather. Cancellations occurring during normal office hours will be posted on the Recreation Hotline. I am unable to register a new vehicle or renew my current registration. I'm told my registration is suspended. How do I find out why it is suspended?
The most common reason is that there is likely unpaid parking tickets associated with your name and registration.
You can find out if you have any restrictions against your vehicle registration record that prevent you from obtaining a vehicle title or registration product on the DOT Incident Request page.
You also can do a Driver License Status Check or Reinstatement Eligibility Check on that same page if you are wanting to check your driving status.

I received a Motor Vehicle Registration Fee but do not live within the City of Platteville. Do I have to pay the fee?
Your registration fee includes a new $20 municipal vehicle registration fee collected on behalf of the City of Platteville. You have received this fee because, according to DMV records, your vehicle is registered as "being kept in" the City of Platteville. If your vehicle is not kept in the City of Platteville, please contact the WisDOT at vehiclequestions@dot.wi.gov or (608) 266-1466 to correct their records. Any person who gives a false or fictitious location where a vehicle is customarily kept may be fined not more than $200 or imprisoned not more than six months or both (section 341.60, WI stats.)
I sold my car, but I'm getting Parking Ticket Notices in the mail. Why?
A couple reasons why:
If you left your plates on your car, DOT records are going to show you as the current owner. If you can contact the new owner and obtain your license plates, that is ideal. You can use those plates on another vehicle you purchase if you so choose (saves you money if the plates are still current!). If you cannot get your plates back, you should Cancel them with the DOT.
If the new owner has not registered the car in their name yet, the VIN will still show you as the current owner. You must complete a Seller Notification to show you sold the vehicle:
Beginning January 1, 2016, law (342.41 Identity of buyer) went into effect requiring a person who sells a motor vehicle to another person, including transferring a junk vehicle by bill of sale, to submit notification to the department that a sale has occurred. This is to be done within 30 days of the sale.
This law DOES NOT apply for transfer to or from dealers or other non-individuals, such as companies, charities and government agencies; this requirement is ONLY for sales from one individual to another individual. This can be done on the DOT's Seller Notification Webpage. This is also a great source of information BEFORE you sell your vehicle, so you have all the correct information prepared BEFORE you sell your vehicle.
You are responsible for unpaid parking tickets in your name unless you have documentation proving the sale of the vehicle and the name and address of the new owner.

If your child has not previously taken swimming lessons at the Platteville Family Aquatic Center please reference the American Red Cross Swim Levels Skills Chart.
