Dog Licensing

Dogs 5 months and older are required to be licensed in the City of Platteville.

*As of APRIL 12, 2019, Dog Licenses are available at the Finance Department in City Hall, 75 N. Bonson Street, for the convenience of residents.  The Police Department will no longer be issuing Dog Licenses.*

Dog licenses are valid from January 1 - December 31 in the current calendar year.  Dogs are to be licensed no later than April 1. After April 1st, license fee will include a $20.00 late fee. Please note that a bill from your vet typically does not have the information required to issue a dog license. Dog owners may need to ask their vet for a copy of the Rabies Certificate to ensure they have all the information needed for the licensing process. Neutered/Spayed dogs are $6 and Non-Neutered/Non-Spayed dogs are $12 a year.

To register your dog you will need to bring with you:
Proof of rabies vaccination, typically found on a Rabies Certificate provided by the entity who gave the vaccine. Document should include the Vaccine Manufacturer, Serial # of the Vaccine given (this is not the tag number from the Vet), Date of when vaccine was given, and Date of when Vaccine is needed again (often a 1 year or 3 year time frame).
Payment is accepted in the form of a check, cash, money order, or credit/debit card.

City of Platteville Municipal Code Chapter 6.09 states: “Persons keeping, harboring, or maintaining more than four dogs over the age of 5 months in one location shall, in addition to the individual license for each dog required by this chapter or state statutes, obtain an annual kennel license.  No more than 8 dogs over the age of 5 months shall be kept on any one premise.”
