This internship will provide first-hand experience in public sector administration focusing on various aspects of public finance including budgeting, bond issues and tax incremental financing combined with the opportunity to work on IT administration, elections, licensing, and benefit administration. Scheduling is flexible within regular business hours to accommodate course schedule and summer availability while meeting any college internship requirements.

Essential Functions

The following are normal for the position but shall not be construed as exclusive or inclusive. Other related duties may be required and assigned.

  • Work with Administration Director to update sections of the Govt Finance Officers Assoc. Award-winning budget document, including obtaining data on comparable municipalities.
  • Work with Administration Director to develop a historical cash position tracking tool.
  • Assist with special projects developed to improve internal business processes.
  • Assist with debt issuances including maintaining debt schedules and updating official statements.
  • Assist with TIF annual reports and projections.
  • Assist with grant expenditure tracking and reporting.
  • Assist with regular City accounting duties, including budget process, reconciliations and other accounting duties as needed.
  • Update the City website pages related to the Administration function as needed.
  • Assist with voting administration on election days.
  • Assist with responding to City Council, staff, or citizen questions and/or inquiries.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Current enrollment in bachelors or master’s accounting program or other related field including the completion of introduction to accounting coursework.   Additional accounting coursework desirable.
  • Availability for 10-15 hours weekly and/or additional hours during the summer
  • Excellent mathematical skills
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office products,
  • Strong Excel skills
  • Good written and oral business communication skills
  • Ability to work with others in a professional setting
  • Attention to detail and willingness to learn
