City of Platteville Seeks Grant For Acquisition of Land to Expand Trail Network System

The City of Platteville has applied for a 50% matching grant as part of the Urban Green Space subprogram of the Knowles-Nelson Stewardship Program. The grant will assist with purchasing 11.2 acres of land in the City of Platteville in Grant County.

The City of Platteville plans to acquire five parcels totaling 11.2 acres to expand its trail network system. In partnership with the Platteville Community Arboretum, the city proposes to develop four of the five parcels into a trail corridor and one parcel into a trailhead parking lot. If acquired, recreational activities will include hiking, cross-county skiing, picnicking, fishing, limited trapping, archery hunting and scenic enjoyment.

See parcel and property owner information below.
Parcel #1:  5.3 acres owned by James Harms
Parcel #2: .95 acres owned by J & A Engelke
Parcel #3:  3 acres owned by Rosemeyer
Parcel #4:  1.25 acres owned by Jewison Holding Co.
Parcel #5: .71 acres by Secluded Acres, LLC

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is proposing to make the determination that the prohibition of gun hunting is necessary to protect public safety because of the parcels' proximity to a school, a hospital and commercial buildings. The DNR has also determined a prohibition on the use of body-gripping, jawed and/or cable restraint traps is necessary to protect against user conflict.

The DNR’s initial assessment of the allowed nature-based outdoor activities may be downloaded from the Stewardship Public Notice webpage, or you may request a copy via email by contacting Cheryl Housley at Cheryl.Housley@wisconsin.gov.

The public is encouraged to submit written comments on the proposed acquisition by Dec. 5, 2024 to:

In accordance with s. NR 52.04 (2) (b), Wis. Adm. Code, objections about the hunting activities on this property must show the proposed prohibition to be inconsistent with s. 23.0916 (2) (b), Stats., and s. NR 52.05, Wis. Adm. Code.
