We're Glad You Asked - Why Are The Pickleball Courts Torn Up And Being Repaired?
Why are the Pickleball Courts torn up and being repaired?
When the Pickleball Courts were constructed in 2021, it was identified that corrections needed to be made to the courts to ensure they are up to tournament level specifications, and also to officially meet the specific requirements indicated within the construction contract.
In November of 2021, the contractors involved believed the courts could be utilized until these corrections could be made, and the intention was to make these corrections in Spring of 2022. However, these were not completed because City of Platteville staff, the Platteville Area Pickleball Association (PAPA) and the contractor wanted to ensure the corrections effectively solved the deficiency issues. The City of Platteville, in conjunction with Delta 3 Engineering, provided the contractors with options to either mill off a portion of the surface and replace with new asphalt to correct the deficiencies, or completely remove the asphalt surface and regrade and replace all components.
Originally, the plan identified by the contractor was to try and perform the milling option and only remove about 1.5 inches of the asphalt surface and replace when everything has been verified by Delta 3 Engineering. City Staff and Delta 3 received notification on 10/20/2022 from the contractors after reviewing the milling depths and variations needed to gain compliance, they determined they were going to remove all of the pavement, regrade the sub-base, and then pave again. The intent is to have the paving work completed by the end of 2022 and the repainting and replacing of the fences completed by July 2023.
Will this work cost the City of Platteville Taxpayer additional dollars?
No, due to the original construction not meeting the specification requirements indicated in the contractual agreement, the additional work and cost will not be paid by the City of Platteville or require additional tax dollars to be utilized.
