OE Gray Building

By Guest Blogger Jon Meidinger, Senior Center Manager

This week marks the Senior Center’s first month of operation at OE Gray school. I’d like to recognize those civic-minded citizens who stepped up in a big way to help us move into our spacious new facility.

Nutrition World Outdoor Fitness Center

What I love about the Nutrition World Outdoor Fitness Center project is that it is both aspirational and inspirational.

Last winter Gene Weber came to my office with an idea. I would almost call it a crazy idea (or aspiration) for an outdoor fitness center. The project was going to require fundraising and I expressed some concerns given the other efforts underway for the library, museum and senior center. He said that he understood my concerns. I wished him luck, while secretly thinking that he was going to need some!

Spruce Up Day

Last week, about eight staff members participated in our first volunteer Spruce Up Day. We left our offices for an afternoon to work on the clean-up/beautification of a few spaces near City Hall. Our projects included:

The Joint Finance Committee Comes to Platteville

Council President Eileen Nickels, Council President Pro-Tem Barb Daus and I had the opportunity to speak today before the state legislature’s Joint Committee on Finance. Legislative advocacy is one of the duties of a City Manager. Platteville residents were well represented at the hearing. Also in attendance were UW-P Chancellor Dennis Shields, Platteville School Superintendent Connie Valenza, Chamber of Commerce Director Kathy Kopp, Main Street Director Jack Luedkte, PAIDC Board President Pete Mumm, and Grant Count Board Chair Bob Keene as well as numerous other residents and faculty.

New Officers sworn in at January 10, 2017 Council Meeting

At the first Council meeting in January, we had the pleasure of swearing in two new police officers, Quinten Strand (left) and Simeon Morell (right). While these two are worthy of excitement due to their qualifications alone, our excitement was partially due to the difficulty we had in finding candidates. We started our search in February 2016 and reposted the position twice before successfully hiring last month.

I’ll fallen behind on my blog due to the tremendous amount of work that went into the 2017 budget.  I think both Administration Director Valerie Martin and I would say that we went through all the stages of the grieving process during the budget process…disbelief, denial, anger, self-pity ... and finally…. acceptance.

Shopping Local This Holiday Season

Even though it doesn’t feel like it from a weather perspective, the holiday season is fast approaching. I do a lot less holiday shopping than I used to. My family draws names; so each family member only buys for one other member and then small stocking stuffers for the whole group. My family will also host two international students, one from Ghana and one from South Korea, so I will buy a couple of gifts for the students as well. And, of course, there is no way to resist buying for my niece and nephew.

Who needs Minneapolis?

Many of you already know that I relocated to Platteville from the Twin Cities. I worked for suburbs (Edina and Eden Prairie) but I actually lived in Minneapolis proper. Minneapolis is a fantastic place and I enjoyed my 20 years there. In fact, I thought I would never leave, but life circumstances changed.

A few weeks ago I got an email from the Dakota Jazz Club. The Dakota is a wonderful club in downtown Minneapolis that brings national talent to a small stage. The email was promoting an upcoming group named Igudesman and Joo. Here’s how the group is described:
