City Launches New Online Cemetery Maps

People can now use an interactive map to search Platteville's two public cemeteries. Map users can search for relatives by last name or zoom in on the map to view sections and information about the cemetery. These maps will create a significant time and long-term cost savings for city staff by having this information readily available.

During the summer of 2019, two interns mapped the Hillside and Greenwood Cemeteries in Platteville, Wisconsin. Samuel Tooley, an Industrial Engineering major and Asa Simon, an Electrical Engineering major, both students at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville, collected more than 10,500 photos of gravestones and additional information such as names, birth and death years, and veteran status, that was not available from the current cemetery paper records. Additionally, Tooley created a Storymap that people can submit additional details about buried persons for staff review. Katherine Westaby, Planner/Community Development Specialist managed the project and the technical GIS details.
