Public Notice – Information About Well #6 Testing

The City of Platteville monitors your drinking water for specific contaminants on a regular basis.

We are required to monitor your drinking water for specific contaminants on a regular basis.  Results of regular monitoring are an idicator of whether or not your drinking water meets health standards.  Between 07/01/2019 and 09/30/2019, we did not monitor for radioactivity and volatile organic contaminants from Well 6 due to a miscommunication between the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and the City of Platteville.

What precautions should be taken at this time?
There are no special precautions you need to take.  This was an administrative error only.  Required sampling in February 2019 prior to the July 18, 2019 start of public use showed no violations.  Sampling on November 6, 2019 confirmed there were no violations, thus no danger to the public.

What was the cause of the missed monitoring requirements?
The City of Platteville reported the February 2019 test results to the DNR and requested permission to begin use of Well 6 for public drinking water.  The DNR gave permission in July 2019 and as of July 18, 2019, the City placed Well 6 into service.  DNR staff was required to update their drinking water well database upon granting permission to use the well.  This would have triggered notices to the City of Platteville for quarterly testing.  The DNR did not insert this well into their database until late October 2019 with the backdated approval of July 18, 2019.  This caused the DNR database to send notice to DNR staff and the City of Platteville that the City did not do testing of Well 6 during the 3rd quarter of July through September.  We were required to do additional testing during the 4th quarter of October through December.  These tests were completed on November 6th.

What is being done to correct the problem?
The DNR has corrected the error by inserting Well 6 into their database.  This will prompt DNR staff to send notices of required testing to the City of Platteville in a timely manner.

When will the problem be resolved?
The problem was resolved in November 2019 when the City was notified of additional testing requirements and performed the required testing.  Test results showed no violations.
