Smart Pole Project To Deliver Improved Street Lighting Service In Platteville
High-tech community infrastructure solution will improve public safety
MADISON, Wis. (April 21, 2022) – Platteville residents will soon see some changes downtown thanks to the deployment of new “smart pole” technology along several downtown blocks. The city has partnered with Alliant Energy on the project and will utilize Illuminating Concepts’ Intellistreets system. This upgrade will increase the efficiency of outdoor lighting systems, improve public safety and offer numerous features and capabilities.
“These smart poles will do more than just light streets,” said Howard Crofoot, Platteville’s Director of Public Works. “We look forward to bringing cutting-edge technology to Platteville to improve safety and communicate with the public. We are eager to try new things to help tailor our services in near real time.”
Alliant Energy purchased the equipment and software and worked with Illuminating Concepts on the system design. Wisconsin-based Faith Technologies will install the poles and equipment. In total, Faith Technologies will install eight new poles and upgrade 55 fixtures with energy-saving luminaires along East Main Street and North 2nd Street.
“As technologies continue to evolve, communities are increasingly looking to new, creative solutions that benefit residents and local businesses,” said Jeff Adams, lead customer product manager at Alliant Energy. “We’re pleased to champion this collaborative effort and bring innovative partners to the table in support of the city’s goals. This project is a great opportunity for us to study the integration of advanced technologies, improve efficiency and reduce costs.”
Platteville’s new smart pole technology is part of the Intellistreets system developed by Illuminating Concepts, an architectural lighting design firm best known for its work with Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida. The unique features of the Intellistreets platform will improve lighting efficiency, reduce lighting system disruptions, create new community communication options and enhance public safety. Additionally, the system offers the ability to add future features such as increased Wi-Fi/5G coverage and electric vehicle charging stations.
“Smart infrastructure upgrades are transforming the way communities operate,” said Ron Harwood, founder and CEO of Illuminating Concepts. “The audio system brings a warm feeling to the community, the LED banners bring a robust information system and the cameras help secure the public environment.”
Equipment installation and testing is scheduled to be completed by the end of May.
